The central element from the silver star presentation at this year’s Los Angeles show is called CLS. Not that the new S-Class Convertible is boring to look at, nor is the new hypercar in town, also known as Project One, but for “smaller” budgets, the new 4-door Coupe is a little more attainable.
This new 2019 model is the third generation of the model, and the first thing that comes to mind is the resemblance with the first iteration launched in 2003. The font fascia now proudly wears a sportier grill, clearly inspired by the recent GT cars of the brand. At the other end of the car, the taillights feature a two-level design also inspired from the coupes of the brand.
Mercedes-Benz is a brand recognized for its impressive interiors. The dashboard still has this extra-large touchscreen, while the series of circular air vents is part of the recent design. As for the quality of the materials used inside this German coupe, well, let’s just say that it’s on par with the best products from Stuttgart.
Also new for this generation is the powertrain. Mercedes-Benz is back with an inline-6 engine that is supported by a starter-generator called EQ Boost and an electrical system of 48 volts. These two enable the engine to gain 21 hp and 184 ft-lb for short periods of time. And the engine isn’t shy of power figures, at 362 horsepower and 369 ft-lb of torque. The first model, dubbed CLS450 4MATIC seems ideal for our Canadian winters.
Unfortunately, consumers interested in this new model will have to wait until next fall.
