Kiehls Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil : Review

Hi everyone! Today I’ll be reviewing the new addition to the Kiehls skincare lineup – the Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil. The Midnight Recovery Concentrate is one of their star products and the Cleansing oil has ingredients along the same lines – but with a lighter texture that breaks down makeup and emulsifies with water to give squeaky clean skin. Price – Rs 3200 for 175ml.

The Kiehls Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil comes in a blue translucent plastic bottle with a lockable pump. The texture of the oil is lightweight and silky, it doesn’t feel too viscous or heavy on the skin. It has a faint scent of Lavender, much like the facial oil concentrate. You need 2-3 pumps of this to remove all makeup from the face. Like all cleansing oils, this needs to be gently massaged on dry skin to break down makeup. Because its an oil, it works on stubborn, waterproof makeup as well. After massaging for 20-30 seconds, you need to add a little water and the oil emulsifies at this point, turning milky. Once you rinse with water, it washes off completely without leaving any oily residue on the skin. The skin feels really clean, supple and nourished post use.

The base of this oil is a blend of lightweight esters (like ethylhexyl palmitate, a palm oil derivative) and silicones, which is why it feels so light on the skin. The Lavender adds a soothing feel to it though it may irritate very sensitive skin (fragrance/essential oils can sometimes irritate sensitive skin). On the upside, it contains Squalane (a lipid with natural affinity for skin) and Evening Primrose Oil (rich in omega-6 fatty acids), both of which are excellent for the skin. It is also free from sulphates and mineral-oil, and is non-comedogenic (so it won’t clog pores!). It is ophthalmologically tested, so it can be used in the eye area.

I’ve used several cleansing oils in the past and they generally vary in terms of how well they emulsify. The Kiehls Cleansing oil emulsifies very well with water i.e it produces plenty of emulsion and rinses off completely from the skin, without leaving any greasy feel behind. It also does an excellent job of breaking down heavy makeup. Because it doesn’t leave any residue, it doesn’t necessarily need a follow up cleanser but since I have oily, acne-prone skin, I am serious about cleansing and follow this up with a mild, gel-based cleanser.

Overall, this is a really effective and nourishing cleansing oil that removes all makeup without difficulty and leaves the skin clean and replenished. I love that it doesn’t leave any greasy feel on the skin and I would recommend this to people of all skin types (except those allergic to fragranced skin care). This is now available across Kiehls stores in India. If you’re looking for a new cleansing oil, do give this a try!
